Greece is advancing its energy storage deployment through increased integration of grid-forming technologies, reflecting broader trends across Europe in off-grid resiliency and renewable energy optimization. The country has recently streamlined regulatory procedures for storage projects and reinforced incentives for solar-plus-storage configurations, encouraging rapid development in both mainland and remote regions. These initiatives align with EU-wide goals to enhance energy autonomy and island grid reliability. A new milestone within this framework is the commissioning of Greece’s largest operational grid-forming energy storage system by ENGAIA.
ENGAIA has commissioned one of the most important large-scale energy storage projects in the country: a 3MW / 6MWh power storage system installed at Mount Athos, at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi.
This is the first large-scale energy storage project in Greece to become operational using Huawei storage equipment, and the largest off-grid microgrid energy storage system with grid-forming VSG (Virtual Synchronous Generator) technology in Greece, and one of the largest in Europe. In addition, this project is the largest operational energy storage system in the country.
The system is currently in trial operation, aiming for optimal integration into the monastery’s existing microgrid. Final delivery and full commissioning of the project are expected by the end of the summer, alongside the completion of a new 1.1MW solar PV installation also being built by ENGAIA.
The advanced grid-forming VSG technology used in the system enables maximum utilization of renewable energy sources while ensuring grid stability.
This project marks a milestone for the Greek energy storage market and reinforces ENGAIA’s role as a pioneering EPC company with significant expertise in implementing complex energy projects.
